Employers are looking for more than just qualifications, degrees and skills; they’re looking for a candidate with a top-notch, well rounded personality. Don’t get me wrong, qualifications are a big part of the selection process, but a person’s character goes a long way. Employers have even selected candidates that had little to no experience, but they were able win over the hiring manager with confidence, wit and professionalism. How do I know you may ask, I too was hired as a Technical Analysis, and at that time had no idea what a 403 error was. We are going to take a look at some of the traits that I feel an employer should look for and how to spot “The Perfect Match” in reviewing resumes.

There is a lot that could be said about a person by the way they dress, eye contact and the grip of “confidence” in a handshake, but we want you as an employer to get a great vibe before the initial meeting. Confidence, I would say is the top ranked attribute an employer wants. You want a person that says “yes, I am great in following directions and work well within a team” as well as “I am independent, a self –starter and full of initiative”. There is always that question in an interview, “What Motivates You?” and we always here answers like money, advancement opportunities, families, etc.; but we’re really looking for that self-motivation. How can we see self-motivation on a resume? You can see it in the job descriptions with key words like “Analyzed” and “Consistently”. That shows the dedication of one taking the time to identify and examine the important aspects of their previous jobs and the duties that came with the position.

Resumes that are well put together are also attractive in the selection process. When a candidate shows how their past experiences are a great fit with the job they are applying for, it portrays them as being someone that’s insightful, with intelligence and prepared to take the bull by the horns. What’s more impressive is when they have done their homework on the company and position. Don’t under estimate a candidate that has experiences in retail and fast food restaurants. That is a great sign of not being afraid of hard work, and after all, you want someone that has the total package.
